Week 4

 Learning to write text reviews 

Goal:

Students identify useful words and phrases to write their own product reviews.

Materials/Steps : Analysing language use in product reviews

Remind students that they have to write one text review of either a product or a media (a movie/a game).

Check whether students have reviewed the lesson on how to use wordandphrase.info (https://solatlc.wixsite.com/languaging/hobbyweek8)

Ask students to open 5-10 product reviews websites, open https://www.wordandphrase.info/analyzeText.asp, and copy the reviews and paste them into the box. Then click ‘search’. And click ‘SEE LISTS’ to see the word frequency list of the text.

Identify adjectives used in product reviews

  • Open https://www.classace.io/tools/part-of-speech-identifier 

  • Copy and paste the reviews into the box (it will automatically show the results) 

  • IUse the Find command (press CTRL+F for Windows) to find adjectives 

  • Go back to wordandphrase.info and see how the adjectives are used in the reviews

From wordandphrase.info (the word frequency list), ask students to identify usages of words in product reviews, and share the results in the classroom.

Note: For Wordandphrase.info, students can also click on any word on the text to see its definitions, collocates, and concordance lines. [handout     ]

Students can also make use of other tools to help them write reviews.

  • https://visuwords.com (a visual dictionary and thesaurus) 

  • Using Google’s pattern recognition to get a suggested alternative phrase. To do this, students enter the word in the search box, and click ‘Google Search’.  

  • Google Translate

Give students an opportunity to ask questions about writing product reviews.
