Week 8
Interacting about the hobby
Goal:
Students explore interactions in the forum, and analyse existing comments to create a model for writing their own questions.
Materials/Steps: Exploring interactions in the Reddit forum
1
Check whether students have created an account on Reddit [Note: Only Reddit members are allowed to create and write responses on posts on subreddits]
Explain that the focus of the lesson is on interactions in the forum
2
3
Browse through the posts to see comments
-
Showing work
-
Making compliment: Wth for a split second it looked real, well done
-
Asking for specific instructions to do the hobby: What size paper did you start with? I remember book saying something like 2M !
-
Replying to the responses: I used 1×1meter paper which was perfect. Also the book says it's a 128 grid when it's in fact a 256 grid, so I'd say start with paper no less than that size.
4
Ask students to discuss/share interesting comments and responses
5
Materials/Steps: Analysing forum interaction
Students do a keyword search of their hobby to analyse how Redditors respond to others’ posts
1
Analyse overall patterns: students go to their subreddit and browse through the existing posts to identify how people interact on their subgroup
2
Analyse frequency of words in the comments to identify patterns of Reddit forum interaction through https://www.wordandphrase.info/analyzeText.asp
(See the ‘Reddit origami responses’ file for the explanations of how to use the website to identify the word frequency list).
3
Use corpora and concordance to identify usages of words through Wordandphrase.info
(See the ‘Collocates and concordance’ file for an example)
4
Give students an opportunity to share and discuss:
-
Other possible ways to make use of the website
-
Results from the analysis
5
Writing responses
-
Students read Netiquette on https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette
-
Students brainstorm other basic norms of interacting with other Reddit subscribers.
