Lesson Plan for Teachers

 Hobby course lesson 8

The focuses of this lesson are to help students analyse forum interactions, and to help them identify useful words and phrases to successfully start discussions and interact with other hobbyists on the forum

Task 1: Gaining an overview of forum interactions (Steps 1-5: Exploring interactions in the Reddit forum)

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to help students explore the Reddit forum's interactions

Background information:

Activity stages

  • Ask students whether they have managed to sign up for a Reddit account. More information on signing up for an account: https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360060420092-How-do-I-sign-up-for-a-Reddit-account-

  • Give students an opportunity to ask questions about using and creating an account on Reddit

  • Explain to students that the focus of the lesson is on interactions in the forum, and that the teacher will use the Origami sub-reddit as an example

  • Ask students to open https://www.reddit.com/r/origami/

  • Ask students to browse through existing posts, choose 2-3 posts to see the interactions in the posts (through comments), and try to categorise the comments

  • Ask for some volunteers to share interesting comments, responses, and types of comments

Handouts:

Answers/models/note: To illustrate types of comments on Reddit, teachers may use this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/origami/comments/mpx9yh/american_alligator_by_michael_lafosse_folded_by/) as an example. The types of comments in the post include (1) Making compliment: Wth for a split second it looked real, well done (2) Asking for specific instructions to do the hobby: What size paper did you start with? I remember book saying something like 2M ! (3) Giving an instruction: I used 1×1meter paper which was perfect. Also the book says it's a 128 grid when it's in fact a 256 grid, so I'd say start with paper no less than that size.

Task 2: Gaining an insight into the forum interactions (Steps 1-2: Analysing forum interaction)

Purpose: The aim of this activity is to help students analyse comments and responses to understand how people interact with each other on Reddit.

Background information:

Activity stages

  • Ask students to open their Reddit discussion group, and explain that, in their sub-reddit, they are going to analyse how Redditors respond to others’ posts

  • Ask students to browse through the existing posts (3-5 posts)

  •  Analyse frequency of words in the comments to identify patterns of Reddit forum interaction through https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/ (How to register for the COCA website)

  • Using the website, students analyse the language used in the comments to identify how the hobbyists interact with each other on Reddit. To do this, students are encouraged to look at (1) the words categorized into low, mid, and high frequency based on how often they appear in the corpus (2) the most frequently used words in the copied comments (page 1 of handout explains how this can be done)

  • Ask for some volunteers to share the results

Handouts:  COCA registration

Using COCA to analyse texts

Task 3: Identifying useful words and phrases (Steps 4-6: Analysing forum interaction)

Purpose: The aims of this activity is to demonstrate how students can make use of the website (Wordandphrase.info) to identify useful words and phrases to help them communicate successfully on Reddit

Background information:

Activity stages

  • Using the COCA website, explain that students can click on any word to identify usages of words through these sections: genres, collocates, clusters, and concordance lines (See the instruction in the ‘Using COCA to analyse texts’ handout).

  • Give students an opportunity to share and discuss some interesting chunks (see clusters and concordance lines)

  • Ask students to share and discuss other ways to use the website

  • Explain that they should read the Reddiquette (https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette) before making a contribution on Reddit

Handouts: Using COCA to analyse texts
