Week 5
Initial research for Wikipedia article
Task 1:
What to search: Create a list of search keywords. First, you need a list of keywords that you will use to search. These keywords can come from:
a. Your own imagination (such as the topic name and any related ideas you can think of)
b. From the section headers of your model article
c. From the Google search suggestion drop-down
d. From the bottom of the first page of Google searches
1
Task 2:
Where to search: Perform searches using your keywords. There are several places online to search for your keywords:
a. Google.com
i. Normal Google search
ii. Images
iii. News
v. Advanced search on Google eg. Thai language sites, .edu sites only, etc.
(Note how the advanced search changes your keywords in the search box!)
b. Scholar.google.com – for books and journal articles
c. lib.kmutt.ac.th – KMUTT library
d. library.chula.ac.th – Chulalongkorn University library
e. library.tcdc.or.th – TCDC: Thailand Creative and Design Center
2
Task 3:
Create your own Reference List for all of your sources in the table below. It should include all of the important information about the source such as author name, title, publication date, publisher, etc. (Remember that for books and journals, you can sometimes get all of the citation information from Google Scholar by clicking the ” icon under the source.) Your Reference List should have at least 5 different reputable sources
3
Task 4: Taking notes
Take notes on the topic for your Wikipedia page. It should include
-
At least 15 facts (that is, 1 fact per 1 sentence or phrase), but you can do more. The more you do now, the less you have to do later! Paraphrase your notes IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Do not copy and paste.
-
The section of your outline where the information might go to help you organize your article later.
-
The Source Code from the table on the previous page. This will help you with citations in your article.
