 Wikipedia course lesson 4 

Analyzing texts

Task 1

Purpose: Students will analyze language in wiki pages.

Background information:

In Week 3 students analyzed the outline of a wiki page, and the contents to include in each section. In this lesson, students will look more closely at the language typically used in this kind of text. Here we will use Bard/ChatGPT to help identify language needed.

Activity stages:

Using the PowerPoint, show students how the language in wiki pages follows a predictable patter. The lead is mostly in the present tense, often in the passive voice etc. other sections have different language features (e.g. prepositional phrases as subjects in some sections describing places).

 

Student analyze the texts using AI to help identify key language features. They should do this in sections, because language features often are section specific.

Handouts: None

Task 2

Purpose: Using data from week 3 and week 4, students create a template of a Wikipedia page for their topic.

Background information:

The template needs to be as detailed as possible to facilitate their writing of the page. This tasks is equivalent to planning for an academic or business text.

Activity stages:

The PowerPoint presents a sample of what a student can be expected to produce for this task.

Templates should be handed in to the teacher to check student understanding of this part of the course.
