Week 2

Choosing a topic and identifying model articles

Goal:

Students will find a topic for their own Wikipedia page.

Introduce students to the Wikipedia backend by letting them create a sandbox, and explore the various functions in place.

1

The main assignment involves students writing and publishing a page on Wikipedia. There are various ways for students to find a topic for their own page:

  • What interests them

  • Topics that are missing from Wiki

  • Stubs that need additional work

  • Pages missing in English that may exist in another language

Students need to explore each method since some strategies are not very helpful.

2

Students select a number of possible topics that are feasible, and which can be researched by searching for information available (from libraries, for example). These topics must be submitted to the teacher for approval.
