Introduction to Learning English through Wikipedia
Goal:
Students will become familiar with Wikipedia as a genre of writing, with each step serving specific purposes
Process
Introduce the course goals and the big assignment. Inform students that the course will take them through the process of achieving the assignment.

Introduce the concept of genre. The group worksheet (Exploring genres) will get students to find their own meaning for genre, and how genres differ from one another.​

Show students that ‘writing’ also has different genres (a news article is different from a blog), and that Wikipedia can be considered one of these genres.

Allow students to explore wikipedia pages to identify what is typical about the Wikipedia genre using group worksheet Exploring Wikipedia genre.

Introduce the functions of the Wikipedia page. Allow students to see if these functions are also found on the articles they were exploring. Students can also explore the differences between a Wikipedia page and the associated Simple Wikipedia page.
