 Learning to write text reviews 

Goal:

Students analyse existing media reviews, and explore platforms for writing media reviews.

Materials/Steps : Getting started

As a warm-up activity, ask students to think of their (1) all-time favourite movie (2) most favourite TV series and (3) most favourite game

Explain that the focus of the lesson is analysing media reviews (focusing on organisation and the usage of language in media reviews)

Explain that there are different kinds of movie review platforms. Some examples:

In pairs, students find movie review websites and indicate the types of the review platforms [handout   ]

Materials/steps: Analysing how people write media reviews

Getting an overview of language use in media reviews. Students analyse what people write in a media review.

​

  • Students go to wordandphrase.info, copy some reviews (of either a movie or a game), and paste them onto the search box. Then click ‘SEE LISTS’. 

  • In the [handout], students categorise the words in the word frequency list [See example]

Analysing media reviews organisations. 

​

  • Give the [handout] to students 

  • In pairs, students analyse the organisations of the model media review (e.g. plot summary, evaluation, and some background information) And can you find the common sequence they appear in the reviews? 

  • Students then share their answers/opinions with classmates
