Lesson Plan for Teachers

 Review course lesson 8 

In this lesson, students explore platforms for sharing video reviews. By the end of the lesson, students will have criteria for a ‘good’ video review 

Task 1: Platforms 

Purpose: For students to share their knowledge of reviews  

Procedure: 

  • In groups of 4, students discuss the questions in Task 1 handout. 

Feedback: Deal with any problems or questions. Elicit from students platforms they know for viewing video reviews.  

Material: Lesson 8 Task 1 handout 

Timing: 15+ minutes 

Task 2: Searching

Purpose: To techniques for searching for videos.  

Background: There are a variety of tricks for searching in Google, which students may know, but are worth reviewing. 

Procedure:  

  • In pairs or small groups, students work through the questions in Task 2 handout.  

  • Monitor as necessary. Ensure that students have explore the value of the ‘tools’ function for limiting the number of hits in a search.  

Feedback: Go through the answers as a class. Elicit from the class whether there are other search strategies not covered in the handout. Allow students to share their criteria for selecting their videos in Task 3.  

Material: Lesson 8 Task 2 handout 

Timing: 30+ minutes 

Task 3: Language use in videos

Purpose: To use the language analysis tools with videos. 

Background: The analysis tools explored in the text review section of the course can also be used with video reviews, but students need to extract the transcript from the video. 

Procedure:  

  • In pairs or small groups students work through the questions in Task 3 handout. 

  • Be available to assist students in accessing the transcript, and as they work through the various tools using the transcript. 

  • Encourage students to choose a video of their own to analyse the transcript in the second part of this Task.  

Feedback: Elicit if students have other tips for working with a video transcript. Point out that transcripts can be translated. Allow students to compare the English and Thai versions of the transcript, especially for sections of the video that include exclamations.  

Material: Lesson 8 Task 3 handout 

Timing: 60 minutes 

Task 4: Trustworthiness

Purpose: Students make decisions about what they consider to be a good video review. 

Background: There are too many videos for a viewer to watch them all, so decisions need to be made about which video to watch. In this activity students make these decisions explicit. 

Procedure:  

  • Working alone, students work through the questions in Task 4 handout. 

  • Once they have made their decisions about criteria for video selection, put the sudents into small groups to share their ideas.. 

Feedback: Allow students to share their criteria for video selection, and for identifying trustworthiness of videos.

Timing: 45 minutes
