Lesson Plan for Teachers

 Review course lesson 12

Students get ready for making their own video review, to be uploaded to YouTube.

Elicit from students all the aspects of video reviews covered in the course so far. Explain that for the final assignment for this part of the course, they are to make their own review video. It can be of a product, a place, a movie or a game. They can choose how they wish to deliver their review. This lesson will focus on some key elements of producing a video.

Task 1: Making a review

Purpose: Students look at some ideas and tips on making videos for YouTube.

Procedure:

  • In small groups, students work through the task in Task 1 handout.

  • Students can focus on the videos related to their chosen video (eg. Game review). Allow students doing similar kinds of reviews to work together to identify useful tips from the videos and what the videos may have missed in terms of video production.

Feedback:

Task 1: Allow students to comment on the videos, and identify anything that may be missing from these videos. One point to highlight at this point is the question of copyrighted material. Ask students if there is any problem with including clips, music or photos that are copyrighted, and what consequences there are for doing so.

Material: Lesson 12 Task 1 handout

Timing: 30 minutes

Task 2: Content of video reviews

Purpose: Students decide on the content and sequence of their video review.

Background: Before starting the video, students will need to decide exactly what needs to be included in a review, and what should be left out.

Procedure:

  • In groups, students work through Task 2 handout.

  • All students working on similar kinds of videos to decide on the sequence of content.

  • Students should decide on what footage/photos/clips will match each of the stages of the video.

Feedback: Each student’s response will be unique, so running plenary feedback will be counter-productive. However, make sure students are clear that at this point the video needs a clear sequence of content, and decisions about visuals that match each stage.

Material: Lesson 12 Task 2 handout

Timing: 20+ minutes

Task 3: Storyboarding the video

Purpose: Students begin to produce a storyboard for their video review.

Background: The students have already come across storyboarding in a previous course. They can use whatever storyboarding software (or paper) to complete this task.

Procedure:

  • Allow students to work alone to prepare a storyboard for the first two or three parts of their video. Allow for around 20 minutes for this, and monitor and help those students who are having trouble. Free storyboard software is available online, though it is fiddly and requires some learning.

  • Get students to show their storyboard to their group and get feedback on the sequence, content, visuals, and possible script content.

  • Monitor and help students with language analysis as necessary.

Feedback: Once you feel students have started picking up momentum in the process of designing and developing their video, you can end the lesson and let the students continue to work alone.

Material: None

Timing: 45+ minutes

Students are now free to work independently to complete their videos.

Point out before they start that the process of creating a video is fraught with many possible difficulties: multiple takes, editing issues, realization that the content sequence is incorrect. Ask students to stay aware of these difficulties as they can include them as part of their reflection for the course.

Hand out the task instructions and check if there are any questions or comments.
