Lesson Plan for Teachers

 Review course lesson 10

Students explore and discuss movie reviews on YoutTube.

Remind students of the elements of a movie review from the section of the course on text reviews. The language covered there included character adjectives, describing a plot sequence, movie genres, and making recommendations. Elicit from the students what they remember of that language. Introduce movie reviews as an alternative to text reviews. As students about an overlap. Ask if movie reviews may include anything that a text review doesn’t.

Task 1: Content of movie reviews

Purpose: Students analyse move reviews and compare them to text movie reviews.

Procedure:

  • In small groups, students work through the tasks in Task 1 handout.

  • Monitor students as they work and deal with any questions arising.

Feedback:

Task 1: Elicit from students if they had any other predictions of what might be in a movie review.

Task 2: This review of Parasite is very thorough and includes most of the items in task 1. Find out if students identified any other topics the review covers.

Task 3: There are numerous differences between the movie review and any of the written reviews (the details may depend on which written review they use): notably the movie includes footage (although some reviews include screenshots). Allow students to highlight any other differences they encountered.

Material: Lesson 10 Task 1 handout

Timing: 45 minutes

Task 2: Content sequence in a movie review

Purpose: To discuss different approaches to sequencing a movie review.

Background: Reviewers have to make decisions about how to sequence their material – possibly sequentially. In this activity, students decide on how two reviews have their content sequenced.

Procedure:

  • Give students Task 2 handout.

  • Working alone or in pairs, students watch the videos in task 1, and identify how the review contents are sequenced. Allow sufficient time for students to watch the 5 videos.

  • Allow students (or pairs) to check their answers others.

  • Give students time to find a movie review of their own for Task 3 and share what they have found there regarding content sequence.

Feedback: Find out from students what they found for task 1. Elicit which sequence makes most sense to them for a video review of their own.

Material: Lesson 10 Task 2 handout

Timing: 30+ minutes

Task 3: Footage

Purpose: To make decisions about the role of film footage in movie reviews.

Background: Professional film reviews frequently include footage from the film as a way of keeping the viewer’s attention.

Procedure:

  • Ask students about how clips from ‘Parasite’ were used in the reviews, and what purpose they served for the viewer?

  • In small groups, student work through the videos in Task 3 and answer the questions together.

Feedback: Elicit students’ responses about the role of footage. Ask their opinion on how they will/would use footage in a movie review of their own

Material: Lesson 10 Task 3 handout

Timing: 30 minutes
