Week 7

 Interacting about the hobby

Goal:

Students understand the different types of online discussion about a hobby, and analyse existing discussion starters to create a model for writing their own questions.

Materials/Steps: Gaining an overview of Reddit pages

1

Remind students that they will be using Reddit as the forum for online discussion.

Explain that you will show them the different parts of the forum using the Origami sub-Reddit as an example.

2

3

Let them look through the page to identify the main sections.

4

Check what they think are the main sections.

5

6

1-6.png

Ask students to open the Reddit page for their hobby.

7

Let them try to identify basic information about the group (no. of members, date started, group rules, and the Redditquette )

and the important sections in their page. [Note: The sections may be different to those in the origami example]

8

Ask them to read and check their understanding of the sub-Reddit rules.

[Note: They can use any resources to help them. The Google Translate Thai version of the ‘Model attribution’ rule for origami is a nice example of the need to be careful using automated translation]

9

Ask students to form groups (or Breakout rooms) to share what they have learnt, to compare each others’ sub-reddits and to ask for help in understanding the pages.

10

Give an opportunity for asking questions/sharing interesting aspects of their pages etc.

11

Materials/Steps:  Identifying types of posts

Analysing an existing Reddit forum for types of posts: students do a keyword search of their hobby.

  • Browsing through posts to identify categories of posts

  •  Categorising types of questions

  • Identifying how questions are asked

    • Straight Q “What websites do you recommend for beginner origami tutorials?”

    • Indirect Q “Does anyone know how quickly origamishop.us restocks?”

    • Statement “just wanting to know whats easy paper to get in bigger sizes to complete this model”

1

Identifying useful chunks to start posts: students explore existing posts in their subreddits to find useful phrases to write posts. They then share the phrases with their classmates

(See the ‘Useful phrases’  file for some examples shared by the former students).

  • Seeking better understanding “can anyone help me understand…”

  • Asking for tips and tricks “What’s your secret to…”

  • Asking for opinion “want to know your opinion about…”
