Lesson Plan for Teachers

 Hobby course lesson 2

This lesson aims to check whether there is duplication of the hobby choices, and to ensure that students choose the hobby that meet the criteria.

Task 1: Going over students’ choices of hobby (Steps 1-2)

Purpose: The purpose of this task is to check whether the three hobbies chosen in the “My Hobby” form meet the criteria.

Background information: As we consider extensive exposure to English to be important, each chosen hobby needs to have a Reddit discussion group with around a thousand members in the group. This criterion will help students’ posts on Reddit to elicit comments from other hobbyists, ensuring that they will have exposure to the language through the discussion and interaction with other hobby enthusiasts.

Activity stages

  • Check whether students have completed the form

  • Ask for volunteers to share their choices of hobbies. Give them an opportunity to explain why they chose each hobby

  • Show students the criteria (https://shorturl.at/etJU5) and ask them to confirm that the three choices meet the criteria. Give students an opportunity to discuss or ask questions about the criteria

Task 2: Checking duplication of hobbies (Step 3)

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to ensure that the students’ hobby is different from each other.

Background information: Some students will choose non-specific hobbies (e.g. photography) and so are likely cause duplications in the choices among their classmates.

Activity stages

  • Ask students to complete an online survey form (example: https://forms.gle/Tn8SQvnFBrTRAJvU8). The form should consist of (1) name and surname     (2) three choices.

  • Share the results to the class. Then, identify duplicate hobbies, especially in the students’ no. 1 hobby.

Handouts:

Answers/models/note: If there is any duplication in their no.1 hobby, teachers should advise the students to either do the hobby that is more specific or go for other choices.

Task 3: Discussion about the choices of hobby (Steps 4-7)

Purpose: The discussion will allow students to get some feedback on their choices of hobby from their peers.

Background information: -

Activity stages

  • In groups (or breakout rooms), students share their choices of hobby and ask questions about each other’s choices.

  • Teachers give students these questions to discuss in the groups: (1) What is the hobby about? (2) Have you done this hobby or is it new to you? (3) How are you going to demonstrate your hobby in the tutorial video? (4) Does the hobby meet the criteria? (5) Can you find any English resources about the hobby?

  • After the discussion, allow 5-10 minutes for students to decide their no.1 hobby (i.e. the hobby they want to do in the course).

  • List the hobbies of each student and show the list to the class

Task 4: Categorizing hobbies (Step 8)

Purpose: Students put the hobbies into categories.

Background information: In addition to a broad perspective on a hobby (active hobby vs. passive hobby), a hobby can be classified according to the skills relevant to the hobby.

Activity stages

  • Give students a list of possible groups of hobby (Designing and creating objects, observing things, playing music, doing activities, and outdoor recreation).

  • Illustrate a hobby category using origami

  • Ask students to think about the skills and issues that are related to the chosen hobby, and ask them to group the hobby into a category. Students can come up with their own category if their hobby does not fall into any categories.

  • Give students an opportunity to share their results.

Handouts:

Answers/models/note: Some examples of the hobbies in each category:

Designing and creating objects (e.g. origami, calligraphy)

Observing things (e.g. birdwatching, satellite watching)

Playing music (e.g. classical guitar, khim)

Doing activities (e.g. kite flying, yo-yoing)

Outdoor recreation (e.g. biking)
